TCEB Introduces Energy Management Standard (ISO 50001), Elevating Its Green Meetings to Higher Standards of Sustainability

  • IMPACT – The first convention centre in Thailand to accredit the ISO 50001 certification with support from TCEB.
  • Green Meetings packages – TCEB in collaboration with Thai MICE operators to introduce Green Meetings packages in the international trade shows worldwide.

Bangkok / 6 July 2011 - The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) underlines the leading position of Thailand as a Green Meetings hub in Asia by encouraging Thailand’s MICE operators to accredit ‘ISO 50001’ – The Energy Management Certification with massive support of up to 70% financial subsidy of total fees, together with a plan to launch ‘Green Meetings’ packages in international MICE trade shows worldwide, showing the potential of Thailand as a globally preferred destination for organizing completely green MICE events.

Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, the President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said “It has been three years since we began to build awareness among members of the local MICE Industry of the importance of Green Meetings practice to endorse Thailand as a green destination of choice for any kind of MICE events. Today, we are encouraging Thai MICE operators to bolster their capability to the ISO 50001 standard level as we believe this efficient energy management system will sustainably lift up the nation’s MICE industry in the long run and be able to increase business competitiveness of Thai MICE industry which will help generate more income to our country.”

Effective energy management is a priority focus of ‘ISO 50001’ standard, which has been accepted nationwide since its official launch on 15th June 2011. TCEB recognizes ISO 50001 as the most concrete standard for endorsing the Green Meetings concepts. This standard will expand business opportunities and will affirm MICE professionals who are environmentally conscious, especially in regards to energy consumption.

“To promote the ISO 50001 standard, TCEB has worked closely with the Thai Industrial Standard Institute and with consultants who specialize in environment and energy management to encourage Thai MICE operators to adopt this ISO 50001 standard. By accrediting the ISO 5001 certification, MICE operators are able to improve their energy management system which could save energy costs of more than 20% and could help reinforce good energy management behaviors within organizations. In addition, supporting Thai MICE operators to be accredited with ISO 50001 can distinguish Thailand from other countries when offering to host major global events,” Mr. Akapol added.

TCEB has supported Thai MICE operators to adopt ISO 50001 certification from Certification Body by providing training programs together with a provision of 70% subsidy of total fees. IMPACT convention and exhibition hall at Muang Thong Thani is Thailand’s first MICE operator who has passed the ISO 50001 assessment and is accredited with this energy management system.

Over the past three years since the launching of Green Meetings in Thailand, the present situation sees great potential for a sustainable elevation of MICE industry through ISO 50001 standard. Realizing the potential of Thai MICE industry, TCEB will support Thai MICE operators by helping them introduce their Green Meetings packages at international MICE trade shows worldwide, starting at IMEX American in USA in the upcoming October.

In conclusion, Mr. Akapol, he revealed; “to promote Green Meetings packages in international trade shows indicates our ‘walk the talk’ to utterly provide green services and green functions for MICE delegates worldwide. This will be able to address global environmental concerns and can demonstrate another step up the ladder of achievement of Thailand’s MICE industry.”
